When I first started wrestling, I was partnered up on the road a lot with a refereee by the name of Gary Allen. To his close friends, he was known as “The King.” Gary had been around the business for many years, working the old Al Tomko territory in BC.
I assume that I was paired with Gary early on as part of my wrestling education. I learned a trenedous deal from him in the times that we spent riding from show to show, in the dressing room, and on the phone in-between trips.
Years later, I reconnected with Gary an invited him out to an ECCW show. He respectfully declined, saying he wouldn’t really know anyone there anymore.
In some ways, those words were echoing in my mind when the Firestorm Family pulled up to the Comox Band Hall in Comox, BC this past weekend for an even put on by All Star Wrestling.
Luckily for me, that was not the case. There were plenty of familiar faces on hand for the September 15th All Star Wrestling event, and it was great to catch up with some old friends.
Not to say there weren’t any new faces, because there were a lot of them. I got to meet the vast majority of them, and I must say I was very impressed. The new crop of guys that have come into the BC wrestling scene in my absence are quite a group of talented and dedicated guys and girls. It was great to see the camaraderie they have with one another that I always felt was the key to having a successful show.
What struck me most is how much the guys who were around when I left have improved by leaps and bounds since I’ve been gone. The entire crew was there for the right reasons, and I must admit I got a little excited just seeing them all come together so well.
When I was around ECCW at the very beginnning, it was all about people banding together to do something they loved THEIR WAY. At the time, the wrestling landscape was very splintered, so this togetherness wasn’t exactly something that was commonplace at the time. It makes me very proud to see that over ten years later the scene in general is a close-knit group of good people.
Thanks for a great show, guys! There was even an appearance by some goofy dude named El Antorcha!
