Okay, first of all, I owe you all an apology. This post has nothing to do with sex, or lies. I just named the post that to get your attention.
If I could have any match that I witnessed live on videotape, what would it be?
More than likely, it would be a match before a modest crowd in Chilliwack, BC at the Skway First Nations Hall. Former tag team expert (in the Fantastics) Tommy Rogers and 2nd generation star “Maniac” Matt Borne.
To say these guys brought their A-game is the understatement of the century. Rogers didn’t have a long stint in ECCW, but it was a good one for sure. Plus, he was kind enough to take the time to help some of the younger talent (myself included) and give them some advice. He was an awesome guy, and the collection of Japan tour buttons he had in his Halliburton case was impressive to say the least.
Borne, of course, is as tough as they come. I have a gazillion gallons of respect for him, and I am better off for being around him so much in my formative years. The talent he churned out at his North American Wrestling Asylum during a very short time was top notch. Graduates included my buddy Tony Kozina.
Anyhow, back to the match. I remember peeking through the curtain for the whole thing. To my side was ECCW promoter Michelle Starr, who turned to me and said “man, this is a classic!” He was right. The match was everything I loved about pro wrestling. Physical, athletic, and logical. It was old school, but with a new school approach, just the way I like it.
Right after his ECCW stint, Rogers dove head first into the wars in ECW. I thought he did quite well for himself there.
I wish I had it on tape to see it again.
